Paolo Cipollini holds an M.Eng degree in Electronics Engineering from the University of Pisa, Italy and a Ph.D. degree in Environmental Monitoring from the University of Florence, Italy.
Paolo’s professional background includes 22 years as a Satellite Oceanographer at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, UK where he built up an expertise in remote sensing of oceans and climate with multiple techniques (altimertry, ocean colour, and IR). Then from 2018 to 2020, he started at the ESA Climate Office in the UK as an Earth Observations Applications Engineer. Since 2020, Paolo has been an Ocean and Ice Scientist with the Earth and Mission Science Division at ESA-ESTEC where his role includes providing mission science support for future ESA/Copernicus missions. Paolo is also a Mission Scientist for Copernicus Sentinel-3 Next Generation Optical and Copernicus CRISTAL.
Dr. Cipollini’s research interests include Earth Observation with a particular focus on oceans and cryosphere, climate, remote sensing techniques and algorithms.
Paolo’s journey with GHRSST began when he assumed his current role as the Sentinel-3 Next Generation Optical Mission Scientist. This is when it became clear that it would be highly beneficial for him to get involved with GHRSST. Fellow GHRSST Science Team Member, Craig Donlon, encouraged Paolo to join as a Science Team Member.
Since joining the GHRSST Community, Paolo says he has benefitted from GHRSST’s “technical information and a clear, authoritative view of the requirements coming from the SST user community”. For Paolo, the most significant achievement as a member of the GHRSST Science Team has been presenting the planned evolution of the SLSTR instrument to the community.
