The Inter Comparison Technical Advisory Group (IC-TAG)
The IC-TAG is responsible for the coordination of all aspects of the inter-comparison experiments and real-time intercomparison systems maintained by producer/providers. It is chaired by Matt Martin with vice chair Alexey Kaplan.
The current TAG-Team is listed here. The IC-TAG Terms of Reference can be viewed here.
IC-TAG activities
There are currently three systems contributing to the IC-TAG:
- The GHRSST Multi-Product Ensemble (GMPE) system which is run on a daily basis at the UK Met Office. The GMPE contributes to the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Action DA-06-03 (Use of Ensemble techniques).
- The High Resolution Diagnostic Data-set (HRDDS) system which runs at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton.
- The SST Quality Monitor (SQUAM) system which runs at NOAA NESDIS.
Other inter-comparison information:
- Information regarding GODAE Metrics documentation can be found here.
- Information on L4 analysis intercomparison issues can be found in a L4 SST inter-comparison discussion document written by Jim Cummings.
Operational daily ensemble of global SST
The GMPE system (run on a daily basis at the UK Met Office) takes inputs from various analysis production centres on a routine basis and produces ensemble products. The system contributes to the European MyOcean project. The horizontal resolution of the ensemble products (median and standard deviation) is 1/4º. Access to the GMPE data can be obtained by emailing the MyOcean service desk. The data can be viewed interactively using a Web Map Service, a screen-shot of which is shown below.

Operational daily intercomparisons of various global SST products of the Met Office Operational SST and Sea Ice analysis (OSTIA) together with animations, ensemble mean, standard deviation and number of observations can be found here.
SST Quality Monitoring
Daily intercomparisons between some of the global SST products are produced by NOAA's SST Quality Monitor (SQUAM) system.
