Ship SST Data available through IMOS Ocean Data Portal

( Last Updated: 02-07-2009 )

High-quality SST data from six ships of opportunity and research vessels in the Australian region is now available in netCDF format from the IMOS Ocean Data Portal at http://imos.aodn.org.au/webportal/ or more directly via OPeNDAP from http://opendap-tpac.arcs.org.au/thredds/catalog/IMOS/SOOP/SOOP-SST/catalog.html and http://opendap-tpac.arcs.org.au/thredds/catalog/IMOS/SOOP/SOOP-ASF/catalog.html.  All SST data from VLHJ, VHW5167, FHZI, VNSZ and VNAH is also available on the GTS.

Validation of the near real-time SST data from the RV Southern Surveyor (Callsign VLHJ) and MV Spirit of Tasmania II (Callsign VNSZ) indicate that they have very small biases of < 0.1°C compared with drifting buoys and very low RMS error of 0.2K and 0.3K respectively compared with nighttime AATSR SST.

See http://imos.org.au/sst.html or email Helen Beggs at h.beggs@bom.gov.au for further details.
