Posted on 2009-03-13: JAXA AMSRE L2P product upgrade
Dear GHRSST colleagues,
I'd like to notice you that we did minor version up of AMSR-E SST algorithm since 11 March 2009.
We modified some parameter to address to secular variation.
Since algorithm change is minor, we does not reprocess past products.
Therefore, naming rule of GDS format products (directory "P1AME_GDS") is slightly changed corresponding version number change from v511 to v512.
New product name should be, for example;
FR-20090311-AMSRE-JAXA-L2P-amsre_v512A-v01.xml
FR-20090311-AMSRE-JAXA-L2P-amsre_v512A-v01.xml.md5
Please note that we will continue to produce old version products (v511) until the end of March 2009.
Sincerely yours,
Misako

Posted on 2008-05-27: HRDDS system risk 27th May - June 2nd 2008
The University of Southampton is experiencing flooding. HR-DDS
services at at risk until 2nd June 2008. Services are at extreme risk
(unlikely to be available) from 30th May to 2nd June.
Please contact David Poulter (djsp@mac.com) for more details.
Posted on 2008-05-14: L2P ancillary filling changes
For L2P products filled at the GDAC for ' DT_analysis', 'wind_speed', 'aerosol_optical_depth', and 'sea_ice_fraction', the netCDF attributes 'valid_min' and 'valid_max' have now been corrected to reflect minimum and maximum native data values (e.g., -127 to 127) Before the 'valid_min' and 'valid_max' were the scaled physical values for each parameter.

Posted on 2008-04-27: MODIS L2P changes
The MODIS L2P Aqua and Terra data files identified with an anomaly in a post on 2008-04-16 are being reprocessed. These reprocessed data have a slightly differenct filename: in the free form part of the L2P filename a "GHRSST_N" or "GHRSST_D" is added to more closely reflect the original name of the HDF Level 2 MODIS file from the NASA Ocean Biology Processing Group.
These reprocessed files and forward stream files that have these new filenames also have adjusted L2P "proximity_confidence" flags to more closely aligned with other GHRSST L2P products. The sole adjustment was to change the flag 2 to become a 1. Flags 5,4, and 3 still represent the best quality. These changes were made in collaboration with the GHRSST Science Team following discussions at the AGU Ocean Sciences Meeting in Orlando, Florida in early March 2008.

Posted on 2008-04-16: MODIS L2P anomaly
Since 3 April 2008, the JPL GDAC has experienced a processing anomaly for MODIS L2P Aqua and Terra data. Approximately 10% of the files are corrupted. We have identified the anomaly and the forward stream is now correct. We will reprocess data from 3-15 April as soon as possible.

Posted 2008-02-17: Data delivery delay for ENVISAT AATSR
14 February 2008
As a consequence of the use of the Artemis Data Relay Satellite by the ATV Jules Verne flight, ESA expects a reduced availability of Artemis for Envisat data acquisition in the coming months, more precisely:
-
no Artemis availability during ATV launch and free-flying phase (about a month)
-
reduced and variable availability for 5 months thereafter
In order to mitigate the impact on Envisat data users, ESA will activate a back-up data acquisition scenario based on the use of the Kiruna and Svalbard stations. The back-up acquisition scenario will be activated about 2 days before ATV launch. Globally, the foreseen impact is:
-
for Low Bit Rate instruments, a small delay (about 1 hour) on the delivery of the data;
-
for ASAR HR and MERIS FR, an overall reduction of the amount of data acquired, which will primarily affect the background mission (so no major impact on acquisitions ordered by users), plus a delay (several hours) in the processing of data acquired in Svalbard.
The ATV launch is currently planned on 8 March 2008. Confirmation of this date and more details on the new mission scenario will be provided next week. Read More

provisional schedule below. Envisat product dissemination should resume
immediately after instrument switch-on as no specific impact on the data
quality is expected as a result of this event.
Nevertheless, data users are kindly invited to report to the Earth
Observation Help Desk team any problem they may experience while processing
data immediately after switch-on.
Provisional start of instrument measurements:
RA-2: Thursday 27 September, ~11:00 UTC
MERIS: Thursday 27 September, ~15:40 UTC
ASAR: Thursday 27 September, ~19:00 UTC
GOMOS: Thursday 27 September, ~22:20 UTC
AATSR: Friday 28 September, ~08:30 UTC
SCIAMACHY: Friday 28 September, ~13:30 UTC

Posted 2007/08/06: METOP AHRPT service
July 31, 2007
Status of Metop-A AHRPT
Since the Metop-A anomaly observed on 4 July 2007 when the AHRPT transmitter was observed to have autonomously switched off, our investigations with Astrium and ESA/ESTEC remained focussed on the status of the failed AHRPT sub-system. These investigations have thus far concluded that the failure on the nominal AHRPT is of a permanent, non-correctable nature and as such, the nominal AHRPT subsystem cannot be used for the remaining operational life-time of the Metop-A spacecraft.
EUMETSAT is now entering a phase in the investigations which turns the focus on the root cause and the potential life-time impact on the Metop-A AHRPT service. It is anticipated that these investigations will continue for several weeks to come. The baseline remains that until these investigations are completed, there will be no decision taken concerning the activation of the remaining redundant AHRPT sub-system.
EUMETSAT appreciates that on-going investigations will mean a continued loss of service for the global user community, but the priority is to understand the failure root cause and the life-time impact on the Metop-A satellite before a decision is taken to use the remaining redundant AHRPT subsystem.
