SST Validation

Validation of GHRSST data sets and services is a complex task.  The VAL-TAG is the team dedicated to the coordination of SST validation/verification and metrics activities to assure the quality and accuracy of GHRSST-PP products and services. The group is currently working to Validation of GHRSST data sets and services is a complex task.  The VAL-TAG is the team dedicated to the coordination of SST validation/verification and metrics activities to assure the quality and accuracy of GHRSST-PP products and services. The group is currently working to define a prioritised set of activities that will assist RDAC/GDAC and the user community.  The MERSEA SST-TAC provides an example of L4 verification/validation monitoring activities. The ISAR AATSR validation program provides an example of in situ validation activities.   To ensure standards are met in terms of validation measurements, several radiometer inter-calibration workshops have been run under the auspices of CEOS at the University of Miami.

Issues to be considerd by the VAL-TAG include:

  1. Validation methodology (using in situ observations)
  2. Inter/cross calibration of in situ observations including Black Bodies, radiometers, ships and buoys, ARGO and any other sources.
  3. Maintain links to CEOS WGCV/IVOS and other appropriate groups
  4. Provide support SSES teams and the GHRSST-PP MDB
  5. Report annually to the GHRSST-PP ST and to other bodies (e.g., CEOS) as required
