Promoting the use of ensemble based techniques within GHRSST-PP

The GHRSST-PP is part of GEO action DA-06-03 which aims to:

Facilitate the development of demonstration projects promoting the wider use, in other disciplines, of ensemble-based techniques originally developed for weather forecasting.

A two page summary document describing the activites of the GHRSST-PP GMPE has been developed as input to the GEO Ministerial Meeting, Cape Town, South Africa, November 2007.

The latest GEO Task Sheet for Action DA-06-03 is here

GEO Action DA-06-03 and the GHRSST-PP GMPE

The DA-06-03 action, which is part of the 2007-09 GEO work plan, will demonstrate the application of the next generation of satellite derived sea surface temperature (SST) observations provided by the Global Ocean Data Assimilation Expereiment (GODAE) High Resolution SST Pilot Project (GHRSST-PP). Activities include:

  • Application of ensemble techniques to account for uncertainty estimates in output products (both analysese and observational products);
  • Use data ssimilation techniques to assimilate GHRSST-PP products and imporve output from ocean and atmospheric forecast systems;
  • Apply ensemble techniques to improve climate monitoring using global and regional SST data sets;
  • Organize and hold a series of focused working sessions/seminars to initiate an in-depth, continuous scientific and technical dialogue between the ocean/weather/climate modelling community and other scientific communities - potential users and/or developers of ensemble techniques.

In addition, the GHRSST-PP will promote the development of these activities through advocacy for international collaboration at organization-, government-, and/or agency- level to help connect most relevant entities and communities for project implementation.

If you would like to be part of this activity, please contact your National GEO represntative or mail Craig Donlon.
